Major new Yorkshire studio gives UK infrastructure further boost
Screen Yorkshire announced today that they have secured the rights to develop a major new studio space within the region. To be developed in partnership with property owners Makin Enterprises, the Yorkshire Studios offers over 96,000 sq ft of shooting space and an expansive backlot, alongside office and workshop facilities.
Built within a former aircraft hangar in Church Fenton, the space is easily accessible from major cities Leeds and York and will allow productions to take further advantage of the expert crew bases and unique locations within the region, as well as the Yorkshire Content Fund, a regional fund which offers film and television productions up to £1 million of investment.
The Yorkshire Studios will add to the extensive alternative stage space already available throughout the UK, including The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, which has recently hosted both Galavant (ABC) and Wolf Hall (Company Pictures/Playground), Wardpark Studios outside Glasgow, home to the hugely successful Outlander (Sony Pictures Television) and Belfast’s Titanic Studios, which has served as the production base for every season of Game of Thrones (HBO).
Speaking about the announcement, Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of the British Film Commission and Film London said: “The UK represents a tremendous draw for overseas productions thanks to its generous Creative Sector Tax Reliefs, and our world-class crews, locations, talent and facilities. Success of course means increased demand, so the significant new studio space at Church Fenton is incredibly welcome news, and I congratulate Screen Yorkshire in their work in helping make it happen”.
Yorkshire has previously played host to several major international productions, including popular period drama Peaky Blinders (Tiger Aspect/Caryn Mandabach Productions) and upcoming feature Hunter’s Prayer (FilmEngine/Screen Yorkshire) starring Sam Worthington. Available immediately, the Yorkshire Studios is set to further enhance the region’s draw.
